As a teenager, I volunteered at a retirement community and would listen to residents tell me their stories. They wanted someone to talk to and play board games with. I picked up on two common regrets and made a decision on my life:
1. Take risks when they present themselves.
2. Spend time with family and friends.
I built my life based on this experience. I didn’t know it then, but I started designing my future in reverse. I started with where I wanted to end up: No regrets.
It’s never too late to start designing backwards.
In the book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing By Bronnie Ware, the author describes her journey as a palliative care nurse and what she discovered.
